About this place
When dinner calls for a thoroughly satisfying spread of beef, Yakiniku Gyutoku Tsudoitei in Tokyo's Oji neighborhood delivers plenty of substance. The signature Toku Kalbi features thick-cut A5 prime short rib, prized for its generous marbling and rich, savory fat. By contrast, the Toku Roast emphasizes tenderness, making it an easy favorite across different generations. Starting the meal over the tabletop grill with staples like the house-specialty salted beef tongue or meltingly soft beef liver sets a comfortable rhythm for the rest of the course.
A distinctive detour from typical barbecue cuts comes in the form of the Gyutoku Burger. Arriving par-cooked at the table, it is finished right on the grill mesh, cooking through on each side for about 3 to 4 minutes before being paired with a house-made Japanese-style steak sauce. Rice dishes and cold noodles round out the meat courses effectively, including stone-cooked garlic rice served in a sizzling bowl and refreshing cold noodles that offer a crisp finish to the meal.
For drinks, the house plum and lemon chu-hi—mixed with fresh lemon, plum pulp, and a plum base steeped in-house since the restaurant was established—provides a sharp, palate-cleansing contrast to richer grilled dishes. Soft drinks and teas are equally accommodating, featuring large 1-liter decanters of black oolong tea suitable for sharing. With booth seats and private dining rooms available, the restaurant caters well to family meals and small gatherings. Because dinner service can get busy, booking in advance is strongly recommended.
